use alternative fuels, like solar, wind, wave, and fuel cells. some people are already using these today.

We've got about 60 more years of expensive oil and that means gas prices will only keep increasing until the only people that can buy it will be the rich. The government has to get with the program NOW instead of fighting for the remaining oil. Some say if we don't fight for it someone else will and while that may be true, it still doesn't solve the long term problem. As long as there is a profit for the oil companies the wars will continue and alternative fuels will be kept on the back burner until they find another way to keep the people enslaved by the oil companies.

Edit: Some people need to wake up and smell the coffee. Mexico has already announced that they only have about 3 years of oil left. Hence Mexicans are leaving the country!! The OPEC nations are using cheaper saline solution to drill and pump the lower second half of the oil because using more oil has become too expensive. In other words it's becoming harder and more expensive to reach.

As fossil fuel becomes more scarce the price will keep rising. This will cause more investment into alternatives and into intensive conservation of all forms of energy. Opposition to wind and water and geothermal power will be pushed aside. Nuclear power will be scaled up big time and made even more efficient (ever see how much heat is wasted in steam plumes from those cooling towers?)
Right now we are only beginning to understand how much energy we waste. I was just reading that the average US home thows away 13% of hte electricity it used keeping electronic appliances, computers, TVs, stereo's etc in standby mode. If electricity costs double people will make sure they turn that stuff OFF.
The transition will have pain - depending on how soon we start and the sooner the better.
There will probably be some wars over resources, but nothing new there.

It's called "fossil" fuel for a reason...it is passe technology...we have come far above this need...the majority just doesn't know it yet...and won't, until as much profit as possible has been removed from these stocks & Big Bro Companies are prepared for the new ones.
Alcohol fuels have been around since moonshine & funny cars, electrics & solars have been around for many decades, and quartz technologies have been sqwelched for eons, because corp./gov. wonders haven't found a way to control a predominantly free, readily available, natural resource.
No worries, Love...it's covered!!! If you could see the prototypes (which I have had the fabulous experiences of) you would be amazed...but knowing how old these techs are before being released into public consumerism is hard to hold. Take dental implants--the "Cadillac tech. of dentistry"--was perfected & used by our military since the Korean war, yet look at the price tag we have to pay today for this "new" option!!!???
Quartz technologies, would put many thousands of businesses out of the works...much of our "fossil" weaponry, including those on the streets, would become lasers & more dangerous than what's out there now. But there would be no more emissions from any vehicle, no need for oils or gas products...and what to do with all the left over "garbage" from such??? Lot's comes into play before "new" gets to come into the general picture...but it's there, nonetheless...See???
We will never "run out" of oil...it is a natural development of Earth's own processes, however, we will run out of need for this particular resource because it simply does not coincide with our positive growth as a species, nor the well-being of the planet that we live upon, to keep using it.
Why not put those "freak out" energies into ideas & experiments of your own??? Hey, you never know!!!

You're thinking is wrong...
This is how it works...
As the petroleum gets more and more expensive to extract, then alternatives look more and more economical.
At about $60 a barrel, the Canadian oil sands become viable alternatives.
At about $100 a barrel, the Wyoming oil shales become viable alternatives.
At about $125 a barrel, the liquification of coal becomes economically viable.
As petroleum gets more and more expensive alternatives like wind power and solar power become money making industries. Also, there becomes more and more reasons to use corn, sugar and other commodities to make biofuels.
All we need is economic incentives and free enterprise (and fewer political impediments). We could have been a lot further along with nuclear power too, if it we're for the stupid liberals gumming up the progress there.

One theory is that, as the supply gets lower and lower the price will rise so high that other options will become do-able, we won't actually run out but it will be priced out of usability and replaced by something else. Freaking out is probably not going to solve anything..

peak oil is a fraud, oil scarcity is artifically created and surprise surprise for profit. it is an excuse to keep profits high while expenses are kept low.
I just read the other day they found another reserve in saudi arabia, they have enough oil to sustain us all at present levels by themselves for 100-200 years. but here here, there is oil nations all over the place, and if government and corporate giants would allow true free trade we wouldn't be having all the problems we are having. governments aka corporations who control said governments determine how much oil will be pumped out, what oil reserves will be harvested and when and what reserves will stay locked up for the sake of profit.
same goes for gold reserves, silver, diamonds, ores of many kinds all to keep the supply less than demand to keep prices up, surprise surprise it is about profit again. right here in the great usa, there are mines that have been deliberatly shut down by overregulation making it impossible for smaller miners to keep operating which is exactly why such regulation is put into place, to shut them down. some mines especially in the northwest terrotories were handed over to foreign corporations. china for one. it is about controling supply keeping it lower than demand, thus profit again.
I am for having vehicals and furnances etc, that get more mileage or btus per gallon of gas, oil or whatever. but this we are running out of oil is just a scare tactic. it is a great excuse to regulate the average joe again, via emissions testings, regulation, like in the uk forcing people to pay exorbiant prices to get windmills and alternative systems in place that don't depend on gas or oil, a way to just snoop into people's business more to control people more again for profit.
when are people going to realize that government people and corporate people lie all the time? when are people going to wake up to teh fact that what they say cannot be trusted, you have to look at what they do, not what they say. when are people going to realize major players within governments and major corps are not interested in their welfare or protecting their rights to life liberty and property? when are they going to start to think for themselves and not take everything they say at face value especially in the news on tv newspapers etc? I hope there are alot of thinkers out there. in fact I am a believer that most people on this forum are and many cases if most people are given half a chance their thinking faculties can be awaken very easily. I have faith enough in people in general that they will be able to see clearly what is really going on.

We have enough oil to last several hundred years if we would just drill for it. China is drilling in the gulf of Mexico for oil and the US is still buying from the Arabs.
