I mean c'mon make David Ortiz play catcher or sommat. Love that. Defense is overrated.

I guess defense does not matter since Ryan Braun had argualbly the worst defensive season this decade, but his offense won him Rookie of the Year.

You know what would be better than Ortiz at catcher, would be seeing him play a game at 2B or SS.

No, it's not completely true. I don't have the book in front of me, but I believe the breakdown is 48% for offense, and the other 52% for pitching and defense. That means more offensive win shares than you'll get for fielding (pitching is the majority of the 52%), but defense still counts.

Some guys will be fairly balanced if they're great defenders - like Tulowitzki this year who had 14.4 for offense, and 10.9 for his glovework. And some players are "punished" for not playing defense, which is why Ortiz had the seventh-most win shares but falls to twelfth in the overall AL stats.

Also, Win Shares is far from a perfect measure. It's one thing you can use, but it's not the defining stat I'd use to measure a player's value.
