I hear this song quite often because Waylan is one of my favorite country singers. I never have figured out what it means. One of my friends told me this weekend, that it was about a Vietnam Vet that lost both legs and an arm during the War and his girlfriend broke up with him because she could not handle his injuries. I've googled it and found the words, but nothing about what it means. Does anyone know anything else about this song?

Simple question? Is MacArthur Park about a Vietnam Vet losing his girl friend?? I know about Ruby and all those other songs. And I'm not confusing this song with any of them. I just want to know what the words mean to MacArthur Park.

MacArthur's Park is a song that was sung by Donna Summers, Donna was raised in Germany, not Vietnam, and the song was about a woman (In Donna's case) losing the love of her life, and how everything seem so perfect and she didn't think that she would ever find a love as perfect for her again! And the cake in the rain could never be put back together again, is what she thinks about her life at this time!

Ruby Dont Take Your Love To Town....Kenny Rogers & The First Edition (1969), it is NOT MacArthur Park, trust me. I have both records. The 60's & 70's were my era and I know lots of music and own lots of music from that time.

I do think you are talking about the wrong song. "MacArthur Park" was most successfully recorded by Richard Harris (the first Dumbledore) and others to follow. It was a nonsensical song partly about leaving cake out in the rain.

Same theme:
Waylon Jennings- MacArthur Park http://www.stlyrics.com/songs/w/waylonjennings4905/macarthurpark1008091.html
Your song description sounds more like Kenny Rogers- Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town. http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Ruby-Don't-Take-Your-Love-To-Town-lyrics-Kenny-Rogers/66BA9969167C724748256A16002F5136 I think your friend is wrong. Ruby sounds more like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZYcqlEZxGQ
Glen Campbell- Galveston. Another country song that doesn't specifically mention the war by name. http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/campbell-glen/galveston-662.html Hear it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zzo8rdi3Qi8
