Is FAS classified as resulting from an envionmental hanzard, or by an infection? Due to the mother drinking, I would think it would be an environmental issue. What are your thoughts?

This is actually a question on a take home psychology exam that I am finishing up. I was thinking it was an environmental hazard, because the child is a product of it's enviornment. However, the child is also being infected by alchohol poisoing. I was just turned around on the question. I didn't mean for this question to turn into a sound board. I am against people who drink and are pregnant, but there are more people who do this than you can imagine. I am a mother of a 2 year old with Down Syndrome, and I'm taking a psychology class on the disabled mind at college to have a better understanding about some of the things that will be happening with my daughter, and other children with different disabilities. A lot of the information given in class just blows my mind. I was appalled to learn that some people actually feed their children lead paint chips to cause brain damage to their child so that they can collect SSI. It's really opened my eyes to how the world really is.

Of those two choices, environmental hazard would be the most logical as FAS does not involve infection. It is easy to pass judgment on women who drink while pregnant. However, alcohol is a powerful drug to some people. Alcohol abuse is no respecter of intelligence or wealth. Anyone who has ever had a loved one who is an alcoholic knows that it is a terrible illness that not only affects the person who drinks, but also all those around the drinker. It is a simplistic thought to say an alcoholic just shouldn't drink. Even with treatment, an alcoholic often "falls off the wagon" even with the best of intentions not to and surrounded by supportive friends and family. I agree that women who are pregnant shouldn't drink, the risk to the baby is tremendous, but I also have seen first hand the devastating effects of alcohol on a person who is addicted. Any one who struggles with alcohol issues needs support, guidance, and caring, not name-calling and contempt which will only send them further into finding solace in alcohol. A little compassion and less judgment would make the world a better place.

Being exposed to a mother that abuses alcohol during her pregnancy would be an environmental hazard for the fetus. Infections during pregnancy are caused by viruses or bacteria.

I'm not sure what qualifies as an "infection" but I would imagine that would have something to do with bacteria or viruses... I would have to agree that it is an "environmental" issue.

Not that I don't agree with the answers above me...it IS stupid to drink while pregnant... I'm just trying to actually answer your question.

It's a stupidity issue

For the thumbs down, I guess it's ok to drink while your pregnant?

Let me answer the question properly. The only way it would
classify as an infection is that the poor fetus is infected with the poison that the mother is stupidly pouring down her throat.
So, I guess I would say that it is environmental.

It is an environmental exposure.
An infection is caused by a specific organism, bacterial or viral for example, that takes over certain cells and their processes.

i think is a selfish issue. A mother who wants to put her child in harms way to satisfy a thirst needs to be slapped upside the head. Its selfish and thats all there is too it

It should be considered homocide or child abuse, if you ask me. Anyone who is that selfish that they would expose their unborn, helpless child to the effects of alcohol should be taken out back and shot. I enjoy to drink socially and smoke, however THE DAY I found out I was pregnant I quit both, and didn't resume until I was finished breast feeding. People need to realize they are torturing a child by doing these things. If we choose to destroy our own bodies, that's our choice, but a baby doesn't have a choice, and should not be subjected to such abuse.
