I always have a hard time shopping for my wife and yet she doesn't like gift cards.

ha- I think Guys are SOOOO hard to buy for!!
Women like lots of things!!
Here are some ideas for your wife:
buy her a cute new dress and take her out for a nice dinner somewhere special
tickets to a broadway show
diamonds (every woman loves diamonds)
a new outfit that you love (she'll wear it regardless since you took the time to pick it out for her!)
or a set of bath salts, lotions, scrubs, etc.... and get her a big comfy looking bathrobe and some good smelling stuff...
a gift certificate to a spa or for a massage or pedicure ror something else girly....
does she have a digital camera? every one likes pictures....
or a boquet of flowers with a sweet letter that you took time to write for her....
does she like to read? maybe a good book & some coffee?
there's lots of different things to choose from.

It's hard to Christmas shop for women because usually they know exactly what they want, down to the color and other specifications. And, if they don't know what they want, at the very least, they still know what they hate.
So, if you're hoping to get your wife a gift that she loves, either be coy and ask a whole lot of questions or be forthright and ask her exactly what she wants. Either approach would have to depend on your wife's personality.
