You should really check out "In the Serpent's Coils" by Tiffany Trent. It is a real page turner that has lots of intrigue. It is a dark, young adult fantasy with elements of magic and mystery. I can't recommend it highly enough:

Older stuff: Anything by Raymond Chandler & Ross MacDonald ("hard-boiled" private eye genre)
Newer stuff: The Joe Gunther mystery series by Archer Mayor, the Martha's Vineyard mystery series by Philip R. Craig, the Spenser & Jesse Stone mysteries by Robert B. Parker, and the "wise-guy, tongue-in-cheek" mysteries by Kinky Friedman.

J. A. Jance is one of my favorite mystery authors. It doesn't really matter which title you choose. I like to read books in the order they were written to see how the author develops characters, especially if they reappear as they do in the Jance books and the two Kellerman's books. If you decide to try Jance, try Hour of the Hunter. It's not a part of a series. I think you'll like Jance. She tells a good story.

Dick Francis writes great mysteries -- my favorite is called "Proof." It's about Scotch (and I love Scotch :)
