Project Guttenburg and Bartleby offer free online editions of various texts. I don't believe they offer anything recent, but they're worth a shot (links in the source section). Also, Amazon.com downloads are often much less expensive than actual texts if you are simply looking for a cheaper alternative and are looking to avoid libraries.

Just get a library card. They're free and you can take the book all over the place to read. You won't have to sit in front of your computer.

You won't be able to find them for free, unless your local library has it on its website. If the author is still alive, it's very difficult to get him/her to agree to allow the book to be available for free like that.
