I could write alot but check out the words to this song. It really says it all. (its also a rather catchy tune if you can listen to a clip of it someplace)

You might also want to arm yourself with some info about the original pan-flute players. Satyrs. :)
They were the original party animals. Connected with the God of Wine. Had orgys with wood nymphs. In fact, altho people know that nymphomania was the psychiatric term for a woman who is hypersexual, they rarely know that sayriosis is the male version. So if anyone calls you names for playing a flute you can laugh at them for not knowing the background of it.

I am a music teacher and musician myself. Most bands of all genres occasionally feature a flute player. Often this is a member who plays another instrument as well, such as guitar or saxophone. One of my favorite pieces for a standard C flute is called "Syrinx" and the music is meant to tell the story of the origin of the pan flute, (also known as pan pipes.) Anyway, I think you have set a nice goal in learning the pan flute, and if you ever have extra time on your hands, give the ocarina a try !

It doesn't matter what other people think! You should do what you love or want to do. If it means play the flute, so be it! I think that would show even more about your personality and your versatility in a positive light.
I think people would see another side of you, if anything, which isn't a bad thing.
Good luck

Learn whatever the hell instrument you feel like. Don't let people put you down because you're supposed to fit into some 'cliche' image.

To look at i'd probably look quite punk/rock but i play all sorts of instruments that aren't. Like the double bass, and the piano, and the guitar, bass, drums (inc orchestral percussion), violin and synthesisers (physical and software).

I don't see the problem. I graduated HS at the top of my class, am a strong Christian, good girl, etc, but I love to dress kinda gothic-y Victorianish, I love vampire novels, and my hair has green streaks in it. We all have our little quirks, and yours doesn't seem especially odd. There's a dud where I live that plays an electric violin out of street corners, really rips into it, and well, good for him, I say. I think it'd be awesoe for you to learn panpipes, go against the grain and all that!!

whats wrong with different? im a harp player... theres millions of guitarists, gazillions of drummers and singers...

not so many bass players, or banjo players, or harpers,

and listen to jethro tull...ian anderson didnt do too badly...

and i have a mate who makes these flutes, in fact he makes all sorts from 6 feet tall abbysinian yak herders flute, to american indian flutes, to double barreled thingys... (im NOT a flautist so i dont know the technical terms)

if you want more, e me. and ill give you his website/email.

Ah, the joys of a shrinking world... be different, DARE to be different... different scares some, and impresses the hell out of others.

A friend of mine is a busker that plays the pan flute. He makes good money.

He was a quite fellow anyways so it didn't mess with his image. However, DO WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY and let them laugh if they want to. If you get to be as good as him you will earn a VERY GOOD LIVING from it.

Stupid people - yes.

I saw this band called Lake Trout once, and the one dude played the flute to Black Sabbath's, "War Pigs" It was off the hook! Nothing but respect for that guy.

But, yeah, other people would call you names.

You can enjoy multiple styles of music with out being judged lol
Your personality will outweigh any affects this new venture may cause. And uniqueness is a quality many people admire ; ).
