I read an article on MSN yesterday about arranged marriages. A banker from New York went back to India to find his bride. I don't truly understand why in contemporary society men would go back to India to find a wife. I am not Indian and would love to gain some insight into why they just don't find a girl here in the city. Isn't this hypocritical? They come here to make money and i know to date around and to have their fun but they go back to find a bride and after 3 dates they are married? I know personally of 3 guys, all in finance, who have done this in the past few years but I don't get it....any thoughts?? is family really the issue or do they want a true indian wifey?

I think it maybe because of values. They feel American values are not the same as theirs. Also, maybe they are afraid of divorce and they think that the Indian women are more submissive.

well, indian people have arranged marriages because love is obviously not an important consideration. like money or social status for example. you wouldnt want to marry someone who economically beneath you right? i mean, even if they were a great caring person who would love and cherish you for who you are. that would just be silly.....
youre looking at this from a western perspective, and wondering why your contemporary friends arent looking at it from the same perspective. its a testiment to the "old country" mentality that is keeping this world from moving forward and realizing what is really valuable.
but hey, what do i know. maybe love, kindness, and personal qualities really dont define a person like i might think, and people are really are defined by how much money they make and how much your parents like them. BOO

Other countries have certain beliefs, like the man marries the woman and then he owns her. It is hard to find an Indian woman that has been accustomed to American standards that will be susceptible to the Indian ways of being considered property of the husband

I think they do that for several reasons; the 1st one is obeying, when you get a woman from abroad she will only see what you see and hear what you hear, second, it's the Lack of values of the American society, so they get one from back home who's not "blessed" by the American way of life, third thing...i guess is the food, Indian guy gotta eat Indian everyday.

Because they want a bride that follows traditional Indian roles and the only way to ensure this is to return to their homeland and select a bride from among those living traditional lives.

Well I am not Indian either, but I think that maybe it is just part of their culture. It is something that in their society that is the only acceptable way to marry. Just like we have things in our society that is taboo and people look down on. In their society they might get looked down on if they find their own wife. It is normal to them just like us finding our own wife or hubby is normal.

Unless he was looking for a groom, you're in the wrong section :)

But my guess would be that he was looking for someone with a similar culture. Some Indian traditions would be looked oddly upon by American women.

Perhaps he either:

(A) Just wants an East Indian wife, as you said; or

(B) Wants a "Stepford Wife", a wife that is not independent ("feminist" types) and "strong", as so many American women are.
