You can have your water break even before you start dilating. I have also seen women who were completely dilated and they still had to have their water artificially broken. So the bottom line, is it could happen any time or not at all.

As to... will you know when it happens? Absolutely, while you won't know WHEN it is going to happen, when it does, it's pretty hard to miss. I guess, in theory, you could be going to the bathroom and it breaks over the toilet...so you might not notice. But that's unlikely, it's a different sensation that urinating.

Good luck.

You do not really need to be dialated to have your water break. With my first baby I was 4 weeks early and all of a sudden I was like a running faucet and couldn't stay dry. With my second baby I was 3 weeks early and just had a slow leak almost like I was leaking urine and a pantyliner was enough for that so it varies with each woman and each pregnancy. You won't know it's coming most likely.

You can be 10 cm dialated and your water does not break. Sometimes they have to break it for you because when the water bag starts coming out before the baby, they dont want him/her to drown in it.
Happy birthing and congratulations. Have fun.

Well, in my case, my water did not break until I was ready to push. We always joked, that the kids broke my waters , themselfs, when they forced themselfs out. So , it could be early, and it could be at the birth itself. Anyones guess? Good Luck dear.

Your water can break at any time, and no you won't know it's going to happen.
With my first one it leaked out slowly. With my 2nd one my water broke and I had her about 10 minutes later.
