You are 100 % right.
The left won't let us tap our own resources, ie the Gulf and other areas of Alaska and the refuse to allow more refineries. So, that keeps us dependant on forigen oil and keeps fuel prices high.
And, why can we not build more nuke plants? They are proven to be the safest and cleanest power available.

No. We need to be smarter and learn from the mistakes of the past. Oil is a finite resource. The environmental groups did not create the problems. They are trying to help as you acknowledge. But even if they stopped being involved, the problem would still be there. It may be delayed but the costs could be greater. I think we may need to either limit the # of SUVs that are on the road (any gas guzzling vehicle for personal/private use) or make them illegal. I know that it's unpopular but I see too many of them on the road. Where I work, 80% of the people here drive a big vehicle. It doesn't seem necessary to me since everyone comes to work solo.
None of us have a particularly long commute. I drive a toyota corolla. I've never been stuck in the snow. I have driven in my share of bad storms.
If we were to decrease demand (widespread) then that would help greatly. It doesn't seem that is likely to happen though.
The environmentalists are not hurting us. We are hurting ourselves with our selfishness, arrogance, and being stupid.
We should be doing as much as we can. No excuse. We should know better.
I don't know any environmentalists that drive BMWs. I'd like to see it though. Maybe the environmentalists I know are not that high up on the food chain.

If you think nuclear is clean then live right next to a nuclear facility when it spews it's radioactive gases to the atmosphere. And if you don't believe they vent that stuff outside you haven't got a clue! It can all be generated from totally renewable sources like solar, wind, tidal, geo-thermal, oceanic-thermal, and of course hydro! I would even accept wood burning plants if they used scrubbers on the stacks continuously! There are already enough petroleum based products out there that if they were recycled properly they would replace new imports of oil for generations!

Environmental groups serve as a watch-dog over out of control development and industry.
They serve a purpose and shold be listened to.
I think even they are surprised by their own clout.
The problem is not them but the politically correct who are too timid to speak up when the environmentalists have crossed the line into the absurd.
Nuclear power is safe but we are too chicken to stand up to the long hairs that march outside with signs that predict doom. When the TV cameras leave all those long hairs drive their BMW's home and turn on the Air Conditioning.
Someone should have the guts to follow them home with the cameras.

When they stopped doing controlled burns and clearing in National Forrest the park rangers with lots of experience all argued in favor of the burning because it would cause forrest fires otherwise. We've had major forest fire issues almost every year since.
Nuclear power is cleaner and more efficient than any other current alternative if done properly, but the stigma keeps it from happening.
Oil drilling is happening off the coast of FL, its just not in US waters. We've tried to get the US out there, farther from the shore than its currently being done and it was not allowed.

Of course they are often very irrational people. We CAN drill here in a very environmentally friendly manner, Nuclear is clean but they want everything stopped. Of course they stop logging and other forestry activities that would keep forest fires from becoming so disastrous too but oh well

Hurt us now, keep us from hurting much more later.
I thought conservatives preached that.
