Children sometimes like hearing scary stories, and actually find them soothing, because they help master fears or resolve inner conflicts. Stated simply, if you can face dragons and ogres, even if only in fantasy, you feel like a pretty tough dude.

But you have be a little careful. Not all kids can use these tales so adaptively. Many are kept awake by them, and even have nightmares.

i am guessing their subconscious tries to make them sort of run away from the fear they would feel if they stayed awake
