That is 2 of the choices on the Michigan written driving test. Had to choose #1 to pass the test, but what happens on the road is a different story.

It depends on how many cars are in the intersection, and if there are people standing at the corners.

I drive for a living, so risking everything just to gain a minute or two of time just is not worth the risk for me.
