Check with the M/B manufacturer. It's marginally possible that your machine might take 1GB sticks but not likely. If it's 512 maximum, putting a larger stick in one slot won't 'mess up' your computer per se, but it won't boot until you put the correct size module in the slot.

You can probably, and i say probably because it may not twork this way, you can probably do that but your board will only read a total of 1GB. Worst case scenario it would start up or might beep at you, then just take it out and put the 512 back or leave the 1GB in.
Look on the manufactures site fro a BIOS update, a BIOS update may modify it and allow you do have mroe than 1GB limit. This is NOT something you want to mess up, if you unsure how to do it, then do it with the guidace of a tech. if a BIOS update goes wrong it will render your mainboard useless. they are very simple to do, but nevertheless i reccomend the presence of a tech.

You can install as much as you want, but your motherboard will only recognize up to 1Gb if that's what the book says, so it would not be something you want to do.

there's a dependency on the motherboard for the memory..
you can check your motherboard online support website...
and ask the experts who know your motherboard more that than other peoples...
and the question to install more memory than listed in the manual is a try...
it will not harm the motherboard...but nothing can be said..
it is advised to contact the customer care services...

It wouldn't mess up your system, it'd just be a waste of money. Mobo's have a cap on memory, and your's is 1Gb. Want more? Upgrade the mobo!

2 512 sticks for now, save up the money and buy another mobo for about 60-100$ that you can put more on
just make sure it will support all the hardware that ur current one will or the cpu wont fit and the ram wont be right
or you could just get a better computer and save up money for it

if your computer is that old and can only do 1gig than anything else you install will be null. I doubt your computer would even read a 1 gig stick. I would just use the computer save the money for the gig stick and buy a better one later

It won't mess up your system. The computer simply will not recognize the larger RAM chip. Sorry to say, but your board will only support 1 Gb.
