i've missed school because my period was so heavy and i'm afriad it would leak when i'm in class. i don't want to use tampons because i'm afraid of Toxic shock syndrome, but i need an alternative as soon as possible! i use pads with maxinum protection, but in about 30 minutes, it begins to leak.

That's actually a medical condition. Ask your mom to make an appointment with your doctor and go talk to her/him about it. I think there are things you can do to avoid having such heavy periods. Good luck!

TSS is very rare. It does occur but not so often that you should worry. Just follow the directions on the tampon box and you'll be fine.
As for your heavy period, is it something that happens or is this the first time it's been so bad? Are your pads leaking from the side or are they leaking all the way through? If it's just off the side you should get better pads. All the way through and you need to go to the doctor.
Could you have been pregnant?
It could be many things but go to the doctor to pinpoint the cause.

I think is normal. There are a lot of women like you. My period is heavy too, maybe not so much, but i'm using two pads and then i'm OK. I have friends with period like yours and the tampons are not a good solution, because is holding the liquid inside you. You may ask your mom, it will be the best for you.

My periods were very heavy when I was at school, it does feel like the world's going to end for that week, if you don't want to use tampons then don't but TSS is rare and you would have to be very unlucky to get it. I finally went to the doctor after 18 months of bad periods and he put me on the pill to regulate them and they did get lighter. I think you should talk to your mum, older sister or friend and ask them to go to the doctor with you, you have nothing to be embarrassed about every woman knows what you are feeling, there is light at the end of the tunnel babe, your doctor can make it easier for you.

Props to you for avoiding tampons! I got TSS when I was 14 years old from a tampon. Not even a high absorpition one; and I only had it in for 6 hours. It is rare- but why risk it. I was so lucky to have a good doc who diagnosed it within about 12 hours. I did not have any long term damage :). Most docs are not so quick to figure it out.

As for your heavy period- When you go to your doctor- don't let him/her give you any easy answers! Ask about what tests they can do, what are all the possibilities. not to freak you out, but endometriosis, fibroids, pituitary gland tumors, hyperthyroidism, etc. Most docs will just prescribe Birth Control and think everything will get better. This is not the case for many women, and it surely does not address whatever underlying condition is causing such heavy periods!
