Suede is made from the cheaper leather and roughed up to give it that soft feel. It can be made from any mammal (or bird, I guess --in theory) that has a thick enough hide. It is usually made from what is left over after the top-grain is removed.

Suede is leather cut from the inside of the hide, rather than the outside. which has a flat, hard surface. Leather workers use special knives to slice the leather into thin sheets.
