I have 2000, BMW E46 3-Series Coupe, sometimes when I attempt to start the car, the car does not start, but instead the rev counter jumps up and down hysterically. Also, the ASC traction control light turns on and does not go off easily, I have been quoted £100+vat just for someone to have a look at it! I have phoned a few independent dealers but nobody knows what it is. I have had the crank sensor and cam sensors mentioned, but they say, even that might not sort it out, can anyone help me?

The correct procedure is go to a shop that has a generic digital fault code reader. It the car is misfiring, there should be several Fault Codes that can be translated into readable English. It sounds like you have a high voltage ignition problem, but you still need the Fault Codes to pin-point the problem(s) more closely. You would likely have to pay for at least 1/2 hour of diagnostic troubleshooting, as a minimum.

I had a problem simular to this on a BMW .the abs had developed a fault which incapacitates the traction control. When we rectified the fault inside a front hub everything was ok.

Check your battery connection as well as condition. Insufficient voltage caused by either a dead battery or bad connection can cause the symptoms you described.

I would look at the alternator. If your charging to high your problem has been known to happen.
