when, in fact, it is the taxpayer who has to pay for the multitude of health problems their greed and laziness causes. Shouldn't they be treated and punished as criminals until they change their ways?

I'd like to see state run fat days. Basically government inspectors would serve notices, like parking tickets, to those deemed to be a fatty. They would then be required to attend 12 weeks of PT in the evening ever day. I'd love to be able to open my curtains and wave to the herd as they puffed and panted along my street.

You have a harsh and cruel outlook on people being overweight yes some people maybe lazy but on a whole many people have many different reason for weight gain and yes they can be victims to an eating disorder. I find your idea to punish people like criminals is daft, the way you help someone is through their mind once you solve the problems in their head then they can start to deal with their problem with food as a stable person. The government keep telling us what food are bad then why don't they just start putting tax on them like they have with drink and cigarettes at least that money could go toward more health care. I also didn't realise that fat people couldn't be taxpayers as that is how you have worded it.

Are you going to treat and punish smokers, drinkers, anorexics, bulimics, cutters, etc. as criminals as well? If so, sure, why not? I would argue that the ignorant should also be punished and treated as criminals because, while fat people may be "lazy" and "greedy" and have a "multitude of health problems," ignorance will be the death of us all. A far more egregious transgression than getting diabetes in my opinion.

Also, the fat people I know don't see themselves as victims because they're fat. They just want people like you to stop making fun of them and trying to make them feel ashamed because of who they are. Getting upset because someone is mooing at you is not playing the role of a victim. It's being human.

The stereotype I have of fat people is that they are friendly, not that they feel they are victims. Taxpayers in America are not paying for the health problems of most of the people who are overweight. We still do not have universal care. And if you want to punish people for eating too much or for having the wrong genetics, you're really a sorry case. Actually I think you are kidding. But if you're visually offended by overweight people just don't look at them.

Dont say all fat people, Plz! Thats a horrible generalization.
Now to the answer. The largest and most powerful lobby in the united states is Lawyers, and the more people they can make believe that they're victims of a wrong, the more people who will be sued... making more money for lawyers. This is the same reason we don't have the more sensible "loser pays" system, where the loser of a lawsuit has to pay the legal costs for the winner. That makes sense because The winner wouldn't have any legal costs whatsoever, if it weren't for the loser. That works no matter who brings suit against whom.

How about sex? Anyone who is participating in sex outside of marriage - think about the cost of unwanted pregnancies and STDs the taxpayer has to cover!

Speeders should also be covered. Let's put restrictions on the cars to only be able to drive the speed limit. Causes of accidents are pricey.

These actions are voluntary too and people should be punished for them.

I am overweight and haven't required any NHS treatment for any weight related issues so don't worry i'm not spending your tax. Oh and just for the record I have payed plenty of tax.

I am on a diet if that makes you feel any better. I put on weight after I had an operation on my knee (I wasn't overweight at the time, in fact I was very fit and healthy) and wasn't able to exercise anymore.

Even though I drastically reduced the amount I was eating I still put on weight. I put it down to the fact I used to be anorexic/bulemic (after 4 years in a violent relationship and being raped twice). I guess I damaged my body from when I used to starve myself.

I hope you are never in a similar situation.

Sorry, I disagree. I don't know any "fat" person that sees themselves as a victim to anything other than over eating. So, if you're worried about paying for their health problems, how much money do you think it will cost you to pay for their legal problems.

Fat people pay for their health insurance PRIVATLY just like both you & me do. Why would taxes pay for their insurance? Only people I l know that have tax funded insurance are the welfarian community. I have heard this statement before from others. To date NOT ONE person I have contacted could reference me to the source that has made the claim you are parroting. CAN YOU OR ANYONE SHOW ME THIS IN WRITING??? I have heard the same statement about people who smoke, but it turned out to be factless & in fact politically motivated thru the social enginering(progressives!) community.

Why single out fat people? One could make the same case for people who risk life and limb climbing mountains, hiking in bear country, who live in high rise apartments, who drink alcohol, who use controlled substances, who surf, who skateboard, who ride bicycles, who hang glide, who fly private aircraft, who use power tools, who live in urban areas etc. All are likely to being some level of medical harm to themselves that society will have to deal with.

How much does it cost to care for a motorcycle rider who splits his head open and suffers sever brain damage? What about a athletes and all their joint injuries? How about anorexics or bulimics? How about people who engage in unprotected sex or S&M or other dangerous sexual play? How about people who drive too fast? How about professional sports? How about water skiing or shark fishing?

How far do the lifestyle police in your country wish to dictate how people should live?

The ignorance, pettiness, intolerance and stupidity of the people here at Yahoo! Answers is pretty frightening.

Let's have people who have drink more than one beer a day labelled as criminals as well, hey?
