They detect proteins, sugars and other things in your urine. Then if there was anything showing up that shouldn't be there they would send your sample off for analysis - that's how I found out i had a urine infection.

hey i know what you mean. i am 33 weeks pregnant and have to do that everytime however i think the stick is purely to check for protein and sugar as this can be early signs of pre eclampsia because the colour of the stick gets matched to how much protein is in your urine. if your are worried about an infection i would say to your midwife and I'm sure she would gladly test you for infection x

Its too make sure all your levels are normal and yes they can detect a bladder infection but i only did one and that was when i was in early labour, just ask the doc and it checks your sugar level also makes sure there no blood in the sample

If the stick you are peeing on is a pregnancy test, there is no reason to use it every time. And it wont detect a bladder infection.
There are many different tests though that use strips in your urine.

yes they would. They should test them against the colour chart thing to see if there is any abonormality in the wee. It can also test for protein in the urine which is a sign of pre-clampsia and is probably the main reason why they do it at every visit. I had pre-clampsia, its not fun!

They make you pee in a cup for everything in the doctors office. Then they take the sample and test it themselves from there.
