Can anyone recommend some versions?
What about Finnish RSO with Saraste?

I have Bernstein's version with the Vienna Philharmonic which is wonderful and (for him) relatively unmannered. Highly recommended and can be obtained easily and at a low price.

I would recommend the following versions:

New Philharmonia Orchestra/Sir John Barbirolli
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra/Leonard Bernstein
Junge Deutsche Philharmonie/Rudolf Barshai
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra/Claudio Abbado

Saraste is not particularly renowned as a Mahler conductor but everything is a matter of personal taste, of course. The four versions above are considered 'classics' of this symphony. They are all quite different and you would like some more than others. Try and get to hear a few versions and see which one suits you best.

Good luck!
