Watch Batman Begins first and you can leave the rest alone. The Dark Knight is not really a continuation of any of the earlier films. It picks up where Batman Begins left off.

Batman Begins could be called a prequel, but I think it was really just the retelling of the story in a more realistic light.

The 1989 Michael Keaton movie was good. The second film, Batman Returns was great in its day. I look back on it now like, "wtf" but I think you had to see it back in its day to really love it.

Batman 3 took a whole different take on the chain and was really flamboyant in its approach. Personally, I pretend this movie never happened.

Batman and Robin- This movie does not exist. No matter what anyone tells you...it is a figment of their imagination. No one in their right mind, especially George Clooney and Arnold Schwartzenegger (sp?) would sign up for this. No one!!! If you come across a copy of it, DO NOT TOUCH IT. Call the authorities.

The older Batman films from the sixties (or whenever) have very good special effects such as the infamous wall climbing scene where Batman and Robin climb up a building via a rope and their cape defies the laws of gravity. I'd skip this too, unless your sentimental for the old days.

it is a new storyline, so the only one you have to watch before the dark knight is batman begins.

as for how many are there,
batman (60's version starring adam west)
batman (michael keaton)
batman returns (michael keaton)
batman forever (val kilmer)
batman and robin (george cloony)
batman begins (start of a new storyline, with christian bale)
the dark knight (christian bale)

looks like 7.

As he says, the current series starts again with "Batman Begins".

There were also a couple of 1940s serials - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_in_popular_media#Theatrical_movies - there are also a few animated movies.
