what you do is draw your water out - and let it sit a day with the top off - so the chlorine will evaporate out

there may also be a treatment or filter that you can use
to also do the trick for you

ours was a prize from a county fair - and he lived 4 years

Well first, like the answer above, chlorine would kill a fish within a few hours. Also, a fish would only be able to survive in tap water probably only for a few hours. You will of course still have to leave the container with the tap water out for 24 hours to fully aerate the water so when the fish are put in the water, there is oxygen in it. Also leaving it out makes the water a neutral temperature so its not too cold, not too hot to avoid shocking the fish. Do it quickly. I made the mistake when I was younger of just pouring a cup of water and plunking my fish in their while I was cleaning the tank. Ya stupid me..the poor thing suffocated and died within a few minutes. Learned my lesson....

Something I found...

"Nearly all tapwater today contains chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metal ions that are added to kill bacteria. They are also harmful to fish, and can cause the fish not only discomfort, but actual physical harm (such as damaged gills) if they are exposed to these chemicals over a long period of time. Some species will keel over immediately when exposed to even small amounts of these toxins."

The chlorine is definetly bad for any type fish. It attacks the gill membranes and your fish will only last a short time.
