I noticed on TV today that three military men came out of the chapel all carrying swords but two were pointed backwards and one forewards. Is this to do with rank or otherwise.

Naval Officers carry the swords high and under the Great Coat.
Infantry officers carry them pointing backwards.
Cavalry Officers carry them pointed forward. The reason being that the Cavalry sword is longer than the others.

I think it was the RAF officer who had his sword forward - perhaps it's one of their traditions.
