These are good low cost companies. Check ryanair.com and transavia.com.

December is low season, before Christmas, So rates are affordable. The only thing is that you have to fly from and to secondary airports, like Stanstead for London or Rotterdam for Amsterdam.

So you consider the time and costs to get to these airports too.

The only other alternative are the trains: but I think are more expensive and take a longer time.

The easiest way it to fly EasyJet, Amsterdam-Schiphol to London, you can choose between 3 London airports. https://www.easyjet.com/en/book/index.asp

Or you can take the train, first to Brussels and there you change to the Eurostar.

Both trips take an actual travel time of about 6 hours, as you need to travel to and from the airports, check in, security, half an hour for boarding, and so on.
So the deciding factor should be price and preference.

The cheapest way will be by bus, most likely, but that will take much longer:

That will take about 10 hours, 2 out of 3 of the scheduled buses overnight trips.

Prices differ enormously, by date and time of the day, and when you book, you will need to look them up yourself.

Cheapest way by far is to hitchhike. Simply make a good sign stating your destination, throw out your thumb roadside and off you go! Best to backpack it (i.e., don't bring a cumbersome suitcase), as I have found that there are a lot of obliging folks who only drive two seater cars.

Oh, and if you're a woman, I recommend that you pull your hair up into a bun and wear masculine clothes so that no pervert picks you up too.
