Email is generally not a secure way to communicate. Think of it like you would a postcard--it's secure as long as it's in your locked mailbox, but anyone can read it while it's in transit.
Spammers can't look inside your inbox. However, as your email is being sent across the Internet, it bounces through several other computers. At any point in this line, someone could intercept it and read it. The odds are pretty low that someone would because, c'mon, most people's email just isn't that interesting.
The reason that email sometimes is slow to be delivered is because it has to go through so many other computers along the way. If any of them is currently offline or overloaded, your email could be delayed until it is re-routed through another computer, or the slow computer comes back online.

Basically e-mail is a save way for communication. In fact, e-mail was an earliest application of internets among scientists and researchers.
Unfortunately, so many negative things happened. Then, you need to do the following:
1. enroll into a trustworthy supplier, e.g. Yahoo
2. create a username, e.g. if your name is Lisa, then you may use asil@yahoo.com as your username.
3. use a good password. i.e. don't let your password content your personal data. e.g. a good password may be newyorkranger0810. Of course, you need to be able to remember it.
4. Don't let other know your password, and don't write down your password in any paper or media other than your brain.
5. select a good service provider for your internet. Even better if that ISP is using VPN for connection between clients and servers.
6. Don't open any junk e-mail but simply delete them forever.
7. Use a good browser. Recently, the major attack is via the plug-in feature of the browser. IE7 is better than firefox.
8. Ensure you got a good anti-virus.
So and so, don't use internet (e-mail & web) for money issues. This is in your own risk.

lol. Don't think of e-mail as being intercepted and read before it arrives. When you send an e-mail it can take a while depending on dns transfers and the amount of time it takes for the networks to communicate and send the data.
Your e-mail is perfectly safe. But on a government side I wouldn't doubt that all our e-mails aren't being screened/read. It's just something we have to deal with unfortunately. But besides that aspect no one will be able to read your e-mail. Spam is spam...it just happens...If you sign up for ANYTHING online with your e-mail address, you're getting spam. That's how the net works. That's why I keep 2 e-mail addresses. One for personal use that I only give out to friends. The other for signing up for forums and all that jazz.
