I guarantee it's longer than that if cared for. I still have CD's I've had for almost 20 years. I've never had one go bad.

Hi

There's no physical contact between the laser and the medium so theoretically they could last for a very long time. The only issues are in handling; scratches, etc.

Once a dvd is scratched you can take it to (many) local video shops and they can resurface the dvd to remove scratches. This can be done 3-4 times for light scratches.

So there you go. In theory your dvds can last a very long time indeed. It comes down to how carefully you look after them.

Also, bear in mind that in 2-3 years the new high-def player/recorders will be mainstream on pc's and you will be able to back up a number of dvd's for each high-def disk. I imagine that in another 10 years or so the format will change again. (Dvd's were only invented in 1991).

It depends on the quality of the CD/DVD. The movies and audio CDs you buy at the store can probably last 10 years, but the ones you buy to burn on can last from 3-5 years depending on it's quality.

Its hard to find out the quality of the disc nowadays too because you're never really sure who made them.... it could be from the same place/plant for you know....

Very short as a bunch of unburns, once burned it gives about 5 years in a cared office condition.
