ALL dryers should be vented, not just gas ones, so that the damp. moist, lint-laden air goes outside, instead of staying inside and causing mold, dust, or allergies. In the US, most states have building codes that deal with dryer exhaust and venting, as mold is a huge, serious health problem.
Personally, having used both, I will take a plain old dryer that needs to be "vented." Having used the other kind -- and the wrinkly mess of clothes that required ironing...well, whatever efficiency may be enjoyed is lost in the cost of electricity and time to iron.

Vented tumble dryers use forced dry air heat infusion and exhaust.
A condenser dryer actually dehumidifies the clothes and air without using gas energy or electric heat and discards the humidity through a hose. These types of dryers are quite expensive, which may explain why they are not popular in U.S.A. However they are an excellent option if you live in a situation that would prohibit having a vent exhaust type dryer (apartments, dormatories, some condominiums).
Gas powered forced air heat dryers must also be vented outside because the exhaust is actually a poisonous gas, not just air, whereas condenser dryers don't have these restrictions
I know a friend who has a condenser dryer and he loves it, cause the unit washes and dries in one unit and he claims it's gentler on the fabrics and he doesn't have to worry about where to vent the exhaust. It's not an issue with condenser dryers

The only kind of dryer that is vented is a gas dryer and why it is vented for reasons: that you have to vent the fumes from the gas and heat also this is a outlet for allowing some lint to escape and cool air to return to the dryer to use for drying this is why it is vented and for your other question of which is the most economical dryer my reply to that is there is no such machine that is totally economical, they all use energy to a certain extent, depending how long you set your dryer for will determine how much energy they use so it does not matter which type you own you will still be getting a energy hog, here is a tip for using less energy just throw in a dry towel with your drying this will help to dry the clothes faster to which you will use less energy. Good Luck !

The ones which have a condenser are by far the best, but they are a little more expensive. These ones contain the water that comes out of your clothes, and you empyt a tray when it's full. Also, you can stand it wherever you want because it operates like this. The others have a pipe which has to be directed outside your house to get rid of the condensation, which means you are limited as to where you can put it. I have had both, and I would never go back to the ones that have not got built in condenser. I can't see that there would be any difference in the running costs. Good luck!

gas dryers must be vented outdoors because the emission is poisonous. Electric dryers can be vented indoors with a special filter ( to catch the clothing dust), which helps to heat the house. Gas may be more expensive due to the rising cost, but I am not sure.

Vented or condenser. Vented costs more initially as you have to buy a venting kit and drill to outside to vet it, but a condenser costs more to run and frankly I have never found them as effective.
