The Monkees.

This was a group fabricated by producer Don Kirschner. The group was to be used for a TV show aimed at teens, of the same name. Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were both multi talented musicians, While Mickey Dolenz and Davey Jones were singers/actors. Basically, Mike and Peter had to help Mickey and Davey learn to be musicians in a band, while Mickey and Davey had to teach Peter and Mike how to act.

The show was successful. It ran 3 or 4 years and has shown up in syndication ever since.

They all played their own instruments by the time it was time for their first concert. Belive it or not, the opening act at their first show was The Jimi Hendrix Experience!

Their success was also fueled by the fact that a majority of songs were written by the best in the business. Carol King (then known as Carol Bayer Sayer), Neil Diamond and the team of Boyce & Hart, wrote most of their well known songs.

The group still tours every so often. Mike Nesmith is no longer an active member of the band, as he doesn't want to tour any more, But has joined the band when they play in the Los Angeles area.

The name of the song is I'm a believer". The original was done by the Monkees BUT if you are talking more modern than that, it would be Smashmouth. They covered the song and it was used on the first "Shrek" movie.
