I'm the same way. I'm often better after five hours of sleep going to bed late than after seven/eight hours going to bed earlier. I've found it's because when I go to bed late, I fall asleep right away and stay in a deep restorative sleep for the entire time. I guess you could say it's more efficient. It's not a good long term strategy but you can get away with it.

check with a doctor but you might have sleep apnea. This is where you will stop breathing during the night and your body will have to wake up to start breathing again. It's not a wide awake full conscious but it is just enough to rouse you and disturb your sleep. The doctor can ask you questions and if he thinks you do qualify the can send you for a sleep study to determine if you do.

The National Sleep Foundation maintains that eight to nine hours of sleep for adult humans is optimal and that sufficient sleep benefits alertness, memory and problem solving, and overall health, as well as reducing the risk of accidents.

Researchers from the University of Warwick, and University College London have found that lack of sleep can more than double the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, but that too much sleep can also double the risk of death. Professor Francesco Cappuccio said: “Short sleep has been shown to be a risk factor for weight gain, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes sometimes leading to mortality . “In terms of prevention,of fatigue and depresion; our findings indicate that consistently sleeping around 7 hours per night is optimal for health. and enhanced longevity. A sustained reduction may predispose to ill-health.”

Rest and sleep is impt . Try to go to bed early so you can sleep longer and have quality sleep ( REM) It prevents daytime fatigue; drowsiness and improves alertness.

lots of people have different sleep patterns, i know my mum goes to bed early (10 ish) wakes up 4 and doesn't get to sleep again. if it's working for you and u are getting a good amount of sleep there shouldn't be a problem.
