there's probably something wrong with your direct 3D, try reinstalling the very latest version, then restart your company. the latest is 10 if you are a windows Vista user

Direct 3D is a component of Microsoft DirectX. DirectX is a collection of programming interfaces that allow high-performance access to multimedia hardware, at the expense of giving up hardware compatibility in a lot of cases.

One common situation where DirectX applications fail is when are the hardware (video card, usually) isn't fully supported by either DirectX and/or the application. Gaming programs are notorious for being picky about which video cards they will work with. Make sure your hardware is listed as supported on the box. Check the Sims website for additional information, too.

Another possible problem is that your DirectX installation is either too old or is damaged somehow. Test this by running "dxdiag" from the Start>Run menu. This will tell you the version of DirectX that is installed and allow you to run some basic diagnostic tests. Make sure "Check for WHQL digital signatures" is checked, and just above that check box you should see the version. Mine is 9.0c, the latest version supported by Win2000, but XP and/or Vista may have something newer. Check the game box to see what Sims requires. Also, the device-dependent part of DirectX support is in your video card's drivers. Make sure these are up-to-date.

On the dxdiag "Display" tab, run the "Test DirectDraw" and "Test Direct3D" buttons. If either of these fails, make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card, then reinstall both your video card drivers and the latest version of DirectX.

If the dxdiag tests succeed, and your video card is listed as supported by Sims2, then you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Sometimes that will fix a mystery error. Sometimes the mystery was a question that wasn't answered right the first time. :^)

Good luck!
