When you buy the name, you enter the proposed name into the search and it tells you if the name is already registered. You can't do it if it is. See the "Get your domain name today" search box on this page here: http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/Home;jsessionid=7D3993DAA8FE64FCA324D8DB49270AA6.TC33b?__reuse=1194771402561

Do a search for the name in google. Also try the link below. That will tell you if it exists and similar names too.

Netcraft offer a service where you can search for registered domain names:
http://searchdns.netcraft.com/
This should let you find if there are already sites registered with similar names... e.g. if you enter "garden" it finds " "gardenweb.com" , "csszengarden.com" and so on.
Only one person can hold a domain name at a particular time, so if you register example.com, you know it is "unique".

There are lots of search engines generally called "whois" searches. I use the one on my domain registrar site: www.domemain.com
