How to link directly to a download?

Im making my own website and i need to know how to link directly to a file on my desktop for download. Example: you go to download.com an you find something to download an you click Download or whatever an a box comes up with open/run file etc.
How do I do that?

You need to upload the file to your webserver. Once you upload the file you just link to it from the domain.

Ex. Let's say you upload a zip with pictures called pictures.zip. You upload it to your main directory which holds your .html files. Once it's uploaded you just give out the url to the file..Which would be

http://www.yourdomain.com/pictures.zip
