I have done extensive research on fish oils. There should be no side effects unless allergic. I haven't heard any evidence of calming children down. I have many testimonies from parents who insist on it helping their child's speech and language improve. Especially those with motor planning problems (dyspraxia). Be sure to find the freshest form, I use Nordic Natural PRO EFA for my son. But the Late Talker book, has an entire section on fish oils. Give it time, you may see great results. If not, you know that it is very good for children, especially since the cutting out of foods with mercury. Now, we hardly get the omegas we need. Can't hurt.

There are many therapies available for children with autism including supplements (fish oil), diets, biofeedback, and more. Some work for some kids. Some can make them worse. As a mom, try what you want for a few days or weeks. If you don't see improvement, then discontinue it. It may or may not work for your son.
What has proven to work, overall, is structure and intense interaction with adults (particularly parents). Talk to your son; teach him anything and everything (we call that incidental teaching); keep a routine for him so that he feels secure; provide consistent discipline; praise him when he succeeds. All these things will work wonders, but they aren't quick fixes. They take a lot of time, effort, and perseverence.

autism is so difference with each victim. I have a grand son that is also autism. my daughter stay so stressed out.
my grand son won't eat anything but chicken nuggets and f/frys. we worry so much about them and can do so little.
he has been to so many doctors and therapy classics. he is so hyper all the time and talks out of his head. [as we say] I pray that a brake through will come soon. in the meanwhile keep on keeping on.

The only "victims" to Autism are the poor children whose parents put them through the unapproved, pointless "treatments" that do nothing but frustrate the child.
My advice; Stop trying to fix or cure your son. Let him be who he is. Children are supposed to be hyper, regardless of their differences. Your child may just be active, and have nothing to do with his Autism. Let him stim until his heart's content. Stimming reduces sensory overload, and lets you know how he's feeling.
Autism is NOT a death sentence, nor is it worse than death. It's sad that these beautiful, innocent children are forced to pretend to be *normal.* There is no normal. There are people who are unaccepting of differences, yet never bother to look in the mirror.
Almost any parent that complains about their child's Autism, never mentions anything other than their sensory issues. Stimming; not the Autism, it's sensory. Not eating has nothing to do with Autism, it's again sensory related. Even lack of eye contact is sensory related.
Take him off of the fish oil and go to a park and let him be a child. Let him obsess over the blade of grass if he chooses. Don't force him to try and be typical, he's not, he wasn't born that way. If he's not good around other kids, go to an empty park. Let him swing for hours, let him spin. Let him be a child in whatever way HE wants to be.

Fish oils don't have an effect on every autistic child. I know of several people who have tried it on their autistic kids and very few saw any effect. It is worth trying as it won't do any harm but don't expect miracles.

You might want to research the claims that fish oil helps autism.
They may not be true.

my best advice would be to check out the parent groups on the net. They are active and will give you real time information.
