I really enjoyed the original Japanese version of 'The Ring' which is called 'Ringu.' It really built up towards a very scary ending. I definitely recommend watching it in the dark by yourself.

I would now say the Poltergeist just because that little girl died while filming a sequel (the 3rd one)and then I heard that there was an earthquake that detroyed every house in the town where they filmed it except the house where they filmed it it was unharmed while the rest of the neighborhood was gone. Plus that little creepy fat lady still gives me the chills.

depending on the era's
1970's - The Exorcist
1980's - Nightmare on Elm street & Friday the 13th
1990's - Chucky lol ... as a kid it scared me, now I just laugh at the red haired, freckled face douche bag...OH NO! HES BEHIND ME! oh wait, that's just my sister's barbie lol
and for this era - Honestly, horror movies are nasty like Saw and Hostel ...I can't stand gut em films

The Shining -- Exorcist -- Ringu -- Horror of Dracula: these are in my shortlist. Ringu may outdo the others as scariest!
