don't move there unless you are SERIOUS about it. you'll get eaten alive. try your hand in small plays, etc, where you live.

Two things I would recommend. Just plan a short term try out. Then start looking now on imdbpro.com and those posting boards for acting jobs. I'm a writer and I thought of getting a po box in hollywood and forwarding the mail to texas to see if that would help. Havent done it yet, taking a break. Good luck though.

One of my friends is currently working on a huge hollywood movie and has been in a movie before and from that she has now got people reprensenting her around america and thats just from working on one film in england. So you should get an agent where your living now and see how things go. if your not satisfied with the work then you could consider the move but dont do anything drastic yet. An agent could get you into movies in Hollywood even if you dont live there.

Act where you are first. Be part of your local community theater. If you have already done that, try to find an agent in L.A. before you move out, get your head shots done and finally, find at least a part-time job to support yourself -pay rent, buy food, etc. [check with losangeles.craigslist.org for jobs here first]
Have Fun. Good Luck!

LA is a beast that eats young, aspiring actors with stars in their eyes. There are thousands and thousands of actors who want what you want. I agree with newyorkgal. You'll want to start in your town first and get some credits on your résumé.
First thing: Get some training. Throughout your career, your training will be on-going. If you find it to be a chore. Stop now.
Secondly, once you have begun to train and feel pretty confident that you are making progress and get that same feedback from your teacher, here is a list of 17 things you could do today to get your acting career off to a start: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/how_to_become_an_actor.html
Good luck!

You should act like you moved to LA and got on a sitcom. See how that works out, if that is successful, then try to move to LA and act like you're on a sitcom. Then, if that too is successful, move to LA and get on a sitcom and act like you did in steps 1 and 2 above.

where are you now? if you're anywhere except NY, I would say move to LA. If you're NY get small parts there build a resume and then go to LA and drop some names you'll be ahead of the game

move to LA? not unless you have LOTS of money and friends there or are planning to go to Drama School there. Working actors for the most part are trained - Meryl Streep didn't just "beome" an actor, she trained for years. School will give you the training, credentials, and credibility you need.

If you have consistently received leading roles in your local theatre group and have done a lot of big roles for several years and have studied acting and all the peripheral classes, then I might say look into it.
If you haven't done any of those things...do them.

Depends on how connected you are, how willing you are to bust your @ss for years, and luck. Oh, and how good your agent is.
Just make sure you have a plan for how you're going to pay the bills until you become a respected character actor.
