ROMEO & JULIET (1968)
I fell in live with this movie nearly 40 years ago, and my love of it remains intense. I still own every item I have collected~stills, posters, lobby cards, etc.
For me, Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey are perfection in the title roles and remain the only actor and actress who were near the ages of this legendary couple. Actually, everything about this movie is perfect~the carefully edited play, the lush musical score by Nino Rota, the jewellike colors and tapestry-like settings, the locations for the balcony and marriage scenes, as well as other important moments, and, most of all, the wonderful cast. The music definitely sets the mood, and the Love Theme is well-known. It appears in a beautifully melancholy form, a madrigal titled "What Is a Youth?", sung during the masque where they first meet.
I love the music so much that I learned it on my bowed psaltery. When I go to Renaissance faires in my costume, I'm prepared to entertain with this lovely music, as well as other melodies that are proper to the period. Occasionally, someone will recognize the Nino Rota music, then I have the opportunity to talk to another fan of this lovely movie that was cheated at the Academy Awards. It should have been Best Picture of the Year instead of "Oliver!"~though I do enjoy that musical. "Romeo & Juliet" is undeniably a better movie.
This film was released when I was a teenager. It seemed that all of the girls fell in love with Leonard Whiting at first sight, and all of the boys thought that Olivia Hussey was the perfect girl. I would say that many of those in my generation still love this film. I'm happy to see that it continues to gather fans. Happily, YouTube has a number of videos but no longer has the complete film. *SIGH*
By the way, I not only love this one the most but also think it is one of the best films. You see, there cannot truly be "the absolute BEST" in filmdom because there are so many genres. You would have to say, What is the best science fiction film? mystery/suspense film? comedy? fantasy? etc. We're not a pack of critics tossing votes together. Each of us loves a different group of films. I've already seen other BEST picks, and of course I don't agree, just as they won't agree with my pick.
We know that we should pick some high-faluting film perhaps. But, I can't say "Citizen Kane" because I think it's severely flawed; that's my opinion as a viewer, not as a film historian. I could name foreign films, and I do love many of them, including some that are all-time classics such as "La Strada" and "Rashomon". I know what I SHOULD name, but my heart and mind agree: "Romeo & Juliet" (1968). Of the thousands of films out there, I choose that one.
I could name a number of others I think quality for best and/or favorite lists, and they would vary widely. Perhaps if others do, I will, too.

ONE of them...would have to be Elizabethtown. It envolves faith, humor, and love. He's about to commit suicide, when another death makes it so he can live. It's warming and sweet. It makes you wonder about your life..it's hard to explain, you really just have to watch it. I mean it's almost euphoric, to me.
