Someone mentioned that Melinda Gates got her fortune through her husband (Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft), however, Liliane Bettencourt inherited her fortune through her father (Eugène Schueller, the founder of L'Oréal, one of the world's leading cosmetics and beauty companies). .. so technically neither female really earned their “personal wealth.”
Melinda Gates’ personal wealth is estimated at $28 billion (that is “If” she and Bill Gate split right in the middle).
Liliane Bettencourt’s personal wealth is estimated at $20.7 billion.

Bettencourt is richer in her own right, with a personal wealth of approx. $21 billion. Most of Melinda Gates's wealth is through her husband - if you assumed that half his wealth (about $56 billion) was hers she'd be richer, but practically all that wealth is from Bill's work, not hers.
