I live in a college dorm, and I don't have a lot of money.

How about something a bit out of the ordinary? Instead of fish, how about shrimp? 1 gallon is really small for any fish, especially Goldfish (Common Goldfish= 1.5+ feet; Fancy Goldfish=8-10 inches). There are a lot of awesome freshwater shrimp like Ghost Shrimp, Red Cherry Shrimp, Amano Shrimp, Bamboo Shrimp, Singapore Shimp, and others, that require very little attention, and in a nicely planted tank, you could do monthly water changes without a problem (shrimp produce virtually no waste). You could do 4 Ghost/Red Cherry/Amano Shrimp or 2 Singapore/Bamboo Shrimp without a problem, and it would be original. Contact me if you have any questions.

EDIT: Bettas are from Thailand, where they live in huge rice paddies, NOT small spaces... Bettas in small spaces are more susceptible to fin rot, ammonia poisoning, and are generally quite inactive. As already stated, Goldfish are monsters, and Common Goldfish should really be in a pond or 150+ gallon tank while Fancies could get away with a 20 gallon tank...

I would get a Betta and a few Cherry shrimp in a 5 gallon. Not only is the tank quite small, those animals thrive in that environment. Bettas are very low maintenance and very pretty to look at. They also have great personalities and are very active. Whatever you do do not get anything less than a 5 gal (20 liter) tank for a betta, no matter what pet store owners say don't get those tiny little bowls for them! It is just cruelty! Anyway have fun with your new fish!

A single Beta. They actually thrive in smaller spaces. A goldfish can survive in a small container, but its actually pretty cruel; they need more room than that. I wouldn't give even a common goldfish less than a 5 gallon tank to live in. 5 gallon tanks are really small, and you can keep a few small fish in there. Any kind of small filtration system, a small heater, a little gravel, a plastic plant-its a heckuva lot better for almost any fish than a bowl, will look a lot better, and wont cost a lot.

1 gallon is way too small for a goldfish, and a betta will survive in it but be unhappy, and probably fall sick quickly. The smallest tank you could keep a fish in is 2.5 gallons, with a filter and heater - you could keep a betta in that, but nothing else.

I agree with Soop about the shrimp. They have very low care requirements and make very unusual tanks.

I like soup nazi's idea about shrimp, and maybe a couple snails.

definitely get a goldfish...one with the big fins and funny puffy eyes. Like the other guy said, you can just about drop them in tap water and they will survive. They are hearty little suckers and they are cheap to buy. Just go to walmart and get one...they are only like 3 or 4 bucks.
