In class, listen to what the teacher says, and take notes. You might consider tape-recording, if the teacher talks really fast. It's not important to get everything, but just the basics.
If there's something you don't understand, ask the teacher after school or get to school a little early and ask then.
Read the assignments, and take notes about the key points. If it's history, you'd note down the important dates, for example. Compare these notes with what the teacher said.
Before a test, look over your notes -- it's faster than reading the assignment all over again!
See if you can find a mnemonic device to help you remember. For example, in music, you can remember the blank spaces of the treble clef by the word FACE (from the bottom, the spaces are F, A, C and E), and the lines are Every Good Boy Does Fine. Another example -- the colors of the rainbow spell out ROY G. BIV (Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). Or the oldy, "In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." If you can't find a mnemonic, make up your own rhyme or initials to help you remember.
Some people learn best by listening, others learn best by seeing, others learn best by touch. Figure out how you learn best, and organize the information you have to learn accordingly. (For example, if you learn best by listening, tape all the facts you have to memorize, and listen to them while you work out.)
And of course, eat well, get enough sleep, and try not to stress out! These are important for a good memory.
Good luck!
