Why when we are one of the richest countries in the world can't we get decent health care to expectant mother's so that children don't die for no reason??? This isn't a third world country where health care is scarce and out date when it does exist?

Because our politicians are too hung up on trying to decide what to do with money, for health care, instead of doing something about it! They act like they don't know how to use the brains they were born with. We elect them to do a job for us but once they're in office - they are completely brain dead.

Unfortunately while everyone in this country is clamoring for socialized health care, our health care system is only one of many factors that go into overall quality and quantity of life. For instance one of the above answerers mentioned average life span. (By the way we're actually not that bad.) But one's diet and level of exercise both have WAY more effect on your lifespan than health care.

Socialized health care is great, as long as you don't mind some gov't bureaucrat making all your health decisions for you. And as long as you don't mind waiting a very long time for some procedures (Canada). And as long as you're not considered too old for certain costly but necessary things like dialysis (Great Britain). And as long as you can afford to buy your own health insurance whether you want to or not. (Most Dem proposals will _require_ everyone to purchase health insurance, regardless of ability to pay.) And as long as you don't mind being prohibited from being able to see a private physician using your own money when the gov't health care system is taking too long or denying you needed care (Canada again).

There is no such thing as a free lunch. We Americans have gotten a bit spoiled, and are now demanding Rolls Royce health care at Yugo prices. We do indeed have the best health care in the world--if you can afford it. But the best of _anything_ never comes cheap. So a reduction in health care prices via gov't regulation will unavoidably result in a reduction in health care quality. If you think everyone has a right to the best, state-of-the-art health care (does everyone also have the right to the best, state-of-the-art housing, too?), then be prepared to pay a whole lot more for it than you are now.

I think this has a lot to do with teenagers having babies . It's almost the norm now in some american cultures. They don't get the prenatal care they need. Then there are the mothers who are addicted to drugs. These two factors could have a lot to do with it. Rarely will a teenage father step up to the plate and help the way he should. Then the young mothers get mad and deny the father visitation and the child grows up starved for attention and seeks out early sexual gradification.

We could.

Powerful lobbies in Washington have a lot tied up in maintaining the status quo, and their money functionally elects our congressmen (rather than our individual votes).

Lets see what Clinton, Obama or some other Dem. could do about that. I only say it that way because no Republican candidate has put forth anything other than more of the status quo on health care, whereas all the Dems have some kind of plan.
