Why is it that there are so many people who cannot tell the difference between words like, "your" and "you're"? How about "their" and "there"? Is our educational system really going to hell in a handbasket?

Yes it is going to "hell in a handbasket". People are just plain lazy and don't care what people think of them even though typing with incorrect grammar and spelling makes them seem like idiots. It's not that hard to type correctly.

Children tend to use words in short concept.....Fastest way to get there word across..no matter the grammar or meaning of the word....But I don not think it is the school system as much as it is the children picking up there own way...We do have English as a subject....Become an English teacher and help out children...Be a leader....Not just a concerned by stander

if you are talking about typing, a lot of people prefer the "shorter" chat-speak version of the words because they do not take so long to type, but in general I don't really know anyone who cannot understand that there definitely is a difference between those type of words.

Because they're uneducated and don't understand the concept of contractions and possessive nouns. That and the fact that they were prolly high during 4 years of high school English...
