Yes, indifference really can be worse.

Example: I'm taking a developmental psychology class which focuses on child development. We've learned in this class that more kids die from neglect than they do physical abuse. I know this isn't a perfect example, but it shows that indifference can be more detrimental than consequences of negative emotion.

At least where there is emotion there is interaction, and thus a possibility (no matter how small) of turning those negative emotions into something else...hopefully positive ones. (Not always possible, I know.) But where there is indifference, it may take greater work to engage emotional interaction. (Also not always true, it really depends on the situation.)

If you are indifferent to them too, then there is no competition, it is much better than being hated.

Sadly yes if you care and the other person is indifferent then it is really worse than any other negative feeling. When it gets to the stage of indifference then you are of no consequence to them any more. If somebody hates you, then at least you have a chance to make amends/renew the relationship because they still have feelings for you, even if it is as negative as hate.

Indifference is the worst because you really don't care, with hate you still have some kind of feeling for a person,

The opposite of hate is apathy.
The opposite of love is apathy.

Apathy (or indifference) means not caring enough TO care...

in order to hate someone requires emotion.
indifference has no emotional bond.
positive or negative responses needs emotion as a basis for feeling. One can say they "hate" that person, yet that same person may have an "indifference" to what that person does.

I think indifference is better. It's better to have one less friend than it is to have an enemy.
