if you are still on the first island, look for the two standing stones, one on the beach and one in shipwreck lagoon. if you have driftwood, and you stand in front of it, it will give you the option to make a craft bench.
as you gain more skills and complete more tasks, the plans for two better benches will become available. hope that helps.
