I would put kaspersky antivirus through the system first..
www.kaspersky.com.au download the free trial.

You can format the computer by using the orignial cd and follow the prompts.

Instead of formatting, do an online virus scan first..
There are a few good ones out there like trendmicro.com
Then download avg anti-virus(the free version), install it, then update it and run it.. Then get your self a good firewall(like zonealarm, the free version) and a good spyware program(like ad-aware se or spybot s&d, there are free versions).. ALWAYS KEEP THESE PROGRAMS UPDATED, you not only will protect yourself from malicious programs, but will help the internet as a whole(all the rest of us)
If you are stilll in need of the reformat process, I need to know what kind of pc(brand and model #) and which version of windows you are using..good luck!

Your best move would be to bring it to a competent repair shop and let the tech do it.

Doing it yourself could mess up the settings so badly you may have to bring it in anyways.

Reformatting the disk and re-installing a new OS is not a problem, but unless you use the original Restore CD that came with your system, you may not be able to replicate the drivers you need.

Reformating a hard drive is a last resort. Try this website for scanning for viruses; it's free. You might also try other websites for detecting spyware - lavasoft and spybot. Try deleting your temp files as well. Also, try doing a scandisk and a defrag at start/programs/accessories/system tools

before you go doing that, ty going online to AVGFREE, just type that in you search engine and go to thei website and download the freeeeeee progam, install it, then immediately get the updates and run a scan. also, I eccommend that you also get EVG anti-root kit and avg antispyware programs, they are all free with free updates . install them all and run each one individually. with the anti rootkit program, just select all and have the program remove the rootkits that it finds, running all these programs on a regular basis will help keep your system free of most problems. I use them, along with Lavasoft's Adaware program and SpyBot, also both free downloads and updates. good luck

Consider this an excellent time to recognize that
your operating system is defective. I recommend replacing
it with one of:

http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.centos.org
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org

Any of these will be more reliable, less susceptible to
viri, uses your hardware more efficiently, and they're
all free.
