Does someone out there know the bowl system well enough to know what game Michigan will play in if they lose to OSU next week, or what bowl game they'll be in if they beat OSU?

First rule of Big Ten discussion: Never listen to Beldin.

Win:Rose
Lose:Capitol One

Capitol one bid goes to the #2 Big Ten team. If Michigan were to lose next week they would be tied with Illinois for second, and would take the tiebreaker as they defeated the Illini earlier this season.

First off, I think your assumption that 1-AA automatically means they can't play football is a bit patronizing. The best 1-AA teams could probably wallop the worst 1-A teams. Also, if Michigan loses to Ohio State, then that is 2 conference losses and Ohio State will have only 1, ergo they will win the Big10. It's determined by conference record and wins and nothing else who wins the Big10. And the Big10 gets an auto spot in the Rose Bowl except in the event that the Big10 champ is headed to the National Championship game and the second place Big 10 team is passed up for a non-conference better team. (Not likely). So if Michigan loses, they will not be in the Rose Bowl because Ohio State would have won the conference.

Win - Rose
Lose - Hate to go against popular belief, but I believe an 8-4 Michigan would be less attractive to bowls than either a 9-3 Illinois or 9-3 Wisconsin, presuming Wisconsin beats Minnesota and Illinois beats Northwestern. I think they end up in San Antonio.

Win-BCS bowl (most likely Rose)
Lose-Outback or Capital One.

Pretty much that simple.
