It annoys me a lot 2. The reason they do it, is because they are working on commission and want to get to the next level by making sales. What I do to get them to stop is tell them I'm just browsing/looking and that usually keeps them from coming back. If they keep coming though just tell them your looking and when you make a decision you'll come and find them. That usually will work.

YES I DO!!!!
Happen to me at a Future Shop: from the moment I step in the door, every department after, "Can I help you?"
I would say, "No thank you", until finally I did except a salesman's help, to find out he couldn't help me, But had something the he liked better than what I was looking for in the first place. He tried selling me the whole CD player instead of the adaptor I was looking for in the first place. I has already told him, I had just bought a brand new CD player 2 months back, and only needed the adaptor, he wouldn't listen.
FRICKEN IDIOT!!
Not to speak of the fact, They follow you around like your going to steal a 46 in. Pasma TVs, that they have on the wall there, and put that in your pocket! LOL

They are merely doing their job and if the money they make is coming from commissions, of course they will seem pushy.
I simply politely say, "I'm just looking. If I need help, I'll call for you." With that, they know you just want to look, and, you wouldn't have had to leave so fast.
You may have to repeat it to other sales persons, but if you say it courteously, without sounding annoyed, they will be courteous and respect your decision not to be interrupted.
No need to make an issue out of it. Just be courteous. You never know, you just may have a question about the furniture that only a salesperson can answer!
Get used to it. They can be of great help. You wouldn't want to alienate sales people who would have otherwise given you a better price or extra deal.

Haha I was looking at clothes the other day while I was waiting for my glasses, (I hate shopping for clothes, so that was very unusual for me) this lady kept asking me if I wanted to try this on, and I kept saying 'no, I'm okay' but she kept interrupting. I'm a pretty patient person, but being constantly watched doesn't feel very good, so I just went to Starbucks to kill time. Haha.

I used to work for a candle store, called Illuminations, one of my favorite places, didnt pay very much at all, but I ended up falling in love with the atmosphere, candles, music and aromatherapy... at first we were instructed to sell sell sell, then we were told to introduce ourselves and then stay nearby in case anyone needed anything and I loved that approach much better...more like an annoying shadow but no talking, just let people gravitate and decide and it seemed more free and people actually bought more, doing it the first way scared them right back out of the door. Please call the manager of the furnature store and suggest this way of sales. I know they could possibly make a commission out of your purchase but that is up to you to decide, they cant force it out of you by harassment. Never hurts to suggest. :)-Rachel.

That's because we are in the "service" era of marketing. How to make the customer satisfied.. do anything.. anything to make the customer happy. GREAT customer service
How are you doing today?
Can I help you find something today?
Did you find everything you were looking for today?
Let me know if you need anything.
We are being catered to like infants.. the result is that we act like them when we don't get our way in a store and cannot admit that sometimes.. we are in the wrong..

I really dislike it, yes. You can always tell which places work on commission and which don't though, because you are never bothered by people in stores that don't pay by commission, yet you are constantly bothered by people competing for the commission.
