depends. if you take the blah inland route down Interstate 5 is is 382 miles, and takes approximately 5 1/2 hours. Of course this is barring no traffic and/or weather related issues. Could take longer if bad accidents.

if you are not pressed for time, I would take 101 south through the central coast, san luis obispo/santa barbara area. It is a much nicer/prettier drive. but is 421 miles and takes about 6 1/2 hours without traffic and accidents.

it is exactly 382 miles and 5 hours and 49 mins but if theres traffic it will take you like up to 7 hours and 20 mins but of course it might take you longer if you stop to eat.

people are very friendly in San Francisco, and the bay area has a nice feel to it (depends if you will live in the innercity or not...) LA is actually really far away...about 6-7 hours.
