Environmental chemicals tend to enter biological cells by diffusion, although the cell's membrane or wall may prevent certain types of chemicals from entering. Once inside the cell, a chemical may benefit the cell by stimulating growth or by replacing a deficient enzyme. However, it is much more likely that an environmental chemical, especially one that is unregulated, will harm the cell by poisoning organelles, interfering with chemical signals, or reacting chemically with functioning parts of the cell such as enzymes or DNA.
