It's not the governments responsibility to lower fuel prices. Where do we stop with the government control then. That's the same as asking the government to lower milk prices, tire prices, electricity, gardening supplies, bottled water, auto insurance etc, anything consumers feel they are paying to much for. The way to lower prices is to reduce consumption. We have competing markets such as China and India with tons of cash vying for large amounts of the same oil. We need less government interference.

Because this is a Capitalist system, not Communist. If you don't want to spend so much money on fuel, carpool and wear more sweaters. Obviously, if someone invents a better mousetrap ( ie, 100 MPG SUV ), then we all benefit. Prices must climb before it gets profitable for someone to make a better mousetrap. Don't expect subsidies, they are ok for disaster emergencies, but NOT for daily living.

The government are doing us a favour by not making fuel cheaper. In both the US and NZ where I live, petrol is too cheap and we waste it. You can see this by the number of cars with just one occupant and the number of SUVs which are never driven off-road. Britain and Norway are both oil exporters but petrol is much more expensive than here. The result? Cheap plentiful public transport.

Why should they be? Doing so would have the same merit as having the government help with my math homework. If people would only stop depending on the government for all their problems then life would be a lot better for everyone.

Because we have a Republican president. Making the federal reserve resources available is an action that can only be taken by the Executive Branch... remember when Bill Clinton countered rising gay prices by opening the reserves.

Because Big Oil gets and keeps politicians in office, not the American Public. One would think that if anything this war int he Middle East would have produced lower fuel costs.

Cheap plentiful transport? Youve obviously never been in a cab or bus in the US . . .

a) its not the governments job and b) the companies that line the white house's pockets and vice versa are getting very very rich, plus Bush has stock w/ big oil. . . thats the only reason we are still at war, they havent gained total control over their oil supply. Plus everyone is more than happy to whine about it, but when you get the emails about the "dont get gas on this day" do you do it?

Because the higher the base price of fuel is, the more money they government collects in taxes on it.

Remember, over half of what you pay at the pump is tax.
