First get over the notion that the first draft has to be perfect. It doesn't. You are going to revise later. Concentrate on getting the story down and have fun with it. As you gain experience, your first drafts will get better, but you will still have to revise.

When you get stuck, outline the story. Where are you going from here? This outline does not have to be followed precisely so don't waste a lot of time on it. It's a guide, not a blueprint. It will help you jumpstart your writing.

If you are having trouble with your characters, spend a little time getting to know them. Fill in their background. If a character refuses to do something you want it to do, there's probably a reason. It's probably something totally out of character and you know sub-consciously that you can't get a mouse to attack a lion.

Keep writing! Above all, write your story FOR YOU. Don't think about impressing others or getting it published...right now focus on writing something that will make you happy! Write what YOU would want to read.

Practical advice: Write something at least once a week to keep you in practice, even if all you can manage is a few sentences. Ask a trusted friend to read through pages and look for typos and any other problems. If you're doubting your work, try flipping the switch and writing something that makes fun of your story and turns it into a joke. Sometimes that gets all the negativity out of my system and takes the pressure off that I'm going to "ruin it" by writing anymore. If you're running out if inspiration, set it aside for a while and write something different (it might also end up fitting into your book as a new character or a new scene).

Good luck! It's not easy to be a writer! :)

If you want some motivation, check out the National Novel Writing Month site. These folks all band together and each agree to produce 50,000 words of a fiction work during the month of November. The point is, even though it's going to be crap, you're writing a lot and getting ideas out there. Site is below.

My husband is a writer, and he'll often have me review and proofread or beta (check out fanfiction sites to see this in action) his work, both published and non. Definitely if he's stuck, and always before submission. My job here is to tell him what works, what doesn't, what fits the topic, and when he's gone for the joke at the expense of the point. I tell him what I liked, what I didn't, and make suggestions on how to change something, or even just that something needs changing. Since we started doing this, he has had several car articles published in magazines published by and for Ford.

FYI, this is not nice for either of us. I have to be tough sometimes, and so does he. If you decide to try this, you MUST find someone to tell you the truth as they see it, and be prepared to discuss why something should stand or how something should change. I cannot emphasize enough how important trust is between a writer and beta reader. The writer must trust that the reader is not being cruel, even if she has just slammed his work. The reader must trust the writer to listen and discuss without getting angry, even if his work has just been totally slammed.

Get to know your characters. In my opinion, the worst thing about animal stories is poor characterization. Anyway, if that doesn't work, force yourself to write. A lot of potential writers never get to writing because they're waiting for inspiration. If it helps, have another story you're working on that is a completely different genre and if you're not in the mood to work on one story, you might be in the mood to work on your other story. And if you're having doubts, you might want to revise your writing. Pretend you're a reader and you didn't write this. Would you still read it?

If you have problem with focus and motivation, the answer is to outline. Start with character studies, and a strong outline. There are many people out there who are able to "wing it" and write without an outline, but when I am teaching CW, I can always tell the ones who have focus issues and I convince them that they need an outline to keep them on track.

I am trying to write a book as well, my Dad was a journalism teacher (he is retired now), but he also wrote two novels, one of which was a best seller. I asked him what to do for "writer's block", cause I was going through the same thing as you.
He said the biggest mistake a writer makes when having "writer's block", is to NOT write. He said sit down in front of the computer and type absolutely anything at all. For example, "the red fox chased after the rabbits", or "on the way to work, my car broke down", he said once you do this, you will begin writing your story, I tried it, and it works for me. Good luck!

Get yourself a copy of...
"I'd Rather Be Writing"

by Marica Golub!

Absolutely keep it near you. You'll see.

*And never stop writing. Breaks--even for
days--are one thing. But if it's your inner
passion, keep feeding it.

Grab books and magazines outside of your
immediate sphere and look at the structure
of their approaches.

Soon, you'll return to where you are/were, afresh.

inspiration are really helpful in writing but what more important is using your imagination and your knowledge to make one whole 'story'.
